What is self-cleaning glass?


Self-cleaning glass also called Auto-clean glass, easy-clean glass


Self-cleaning glass refers to the application of a special coating on the glass surface that makes it difficult for dust or dirty liquids (including liquids containing water or even oil) to adhere to the glass surface or to be washed off more easily by water (or rain) so that the glass surface can be kept clean very easily, reducing the trouble of cleaning the glass surface and saving the increasingly scarce water resources.


This special coating is called "easy to clean coatings", or "self-cleaning coatings". It is developed by using the two basic physical characteristics of objects in nature. The so-called easy-clean glass is a glass surface with high hydrophobicity similar to the lotus effect, so that water can not be completely attached to the glass, so that the surface tension of the water droplets themselves to produce a droplet-like phenomenon, the water droplets will naturally slide off to take away the dust so that the glass has an easy-clean effect, dust will not be able to accumulate, compared to the general glass of water stains, the long-term effect is the quite obvious difference.


Basic characteristics

The two basic physical characteristics of Easy-clean glass are


a, hydrophobic (also called Hydrophobe): refers to a substance (the molecules) that has a strong repulsive effect on water. Water on the surface of hydrophobic objects will form a large contact angle and water droplets. Our common lotus leaf has this effect.


b, hydrophilic (also called Hydrophile): refers to the hydrophilic refers to the molecules and water molecules through the hydrogen bond to form a brief bond, making it particularly easy to combine water and hydrophilic surface. Our common capillary phenomenon is this principle.


YS "easy-clean coatings", or "self-cleaning coatings" for glass surfaces can be broadly divided into three categories.


The first category: the main component is silicone (or silicone organic resin) or other oily materials, coated on the surface of the material to give a feeling of oil, but it does not work with the silica molecules on the surface of the material to generate a solid nano-film, but only to fill the uneven surface of the material that we can not see with the naked eye, making the surface of the material smooth and uniform, the advantage is that it has a strong repulsive effect on water (but not on oil). The disadvantage is that the adhesion is not good, in a short period of time (6-12 months), its rejection of water characteristics will be significantly reduced.


The second category: the main component is titanium dioxide (TiO2). After coating/coating a layer of titanium dioxide film on the glass, titanium dioxide has super hydrophilic properties due to its ability to produce good photocatalytic properties under the action of (ultraviolet) light energy. With this super hydrophilic property (contrary to the hydrophobic property of gold seal coating), it makes very small water droplets gather into large droplets and fall off under the action of gravity, so that stains on it can be easily washed away by water, making the glass easy to clean, and therefore especially suitable for outdoor architectural glass. The advantage is that it is inexpensive, but the disadvantage is that it must be exposed to ultraviolet light, and the adhesion is also poor.


The third category: the main component is inorganic nano-silica material, which is characterized by a super hydrophilic surface coating and good anti-dust, does not depend on sunlight exposure, and works in a completely light-free environment, and is an upgraded version of titanium dioxide type products.


Why self-clean glass can self-cleaning?


Rare-earth polishing materials, precision ceramic materials, rare-earth-doped nano-materials, and other composites rare earth are continuously used in the glass industry to make glass products with better performance and better quality. The recently invented rare-earth-doped nano TiO2 self-cleaning glass has a high visible light transmission rate, high organic decomposition rate, excellent hydrophilicity, solid glass film layer, long durability, easy follow-up processing, etc. The product self-cleaning and other properties have reached the international advanced level.

Rare earth as an important polishing and conditioning material for the glass industry, compared with other materials in the past, has the advantages of fast polishing speed, high finish, and long service life, and can change the polishing quality and operating environment. Self-cleaning super hydrophilic glass film contains nanomaterials with photocatalytic activity, which can absorb certain wavelengths of light, generating free electrons and holes, so that the surface of the film absorbed pollutants occur oxidation-reduction decomposition and remove and kill the surface microflora, to achieve the purpose of self-cleaning, has been studied to show the removal of organic matter and nitrogen compounds in the air and other harmful pollution molecules, the general indoor light can start the self-cleaning function. And the super hydrophilic membrane is attributed to the formation of the surface amphiphilic area, when light irradiation on the membrane surface, the bridge oxygen bond in the surface membrane absorbs energy and breaks to form oxygen vacancies and low valence metal ions, the latter dissociate the chemical absorbent water around the vacancies and form hydrophilic area, other surface areas remain hydrophobic, and the water droplets are always larger than (several orders of magnitude) these hydrophilic or hydrophobic areas, therefore, the water droplets after a certain The membrane surface will be completely spread out after a certain time of illumination, which is similar to the two-dimensional capillary phenomenon. Therefore, microscopically, there are hydrophilic and hydrophobic zones on the membrane surface, while macroscopically, the membrane exhibits super hydrophilicity. The specific functional principles of super hydrophilic self-cleaning membranes are divided as follows.



Dirt can be divided into organic dirt and inorganic dirt. There is a certain amount of organic matter floating in the air, which will slowly form organic dirt on the surface of the object, and this kind of stain is difficult to be washed away by rain, and can only be removed by shabbing. Self-cleaning super large hydrophilic film components contain nano semiconductor materials with photocatalytic activity, absorbing certain wavelengths of the sun said to produce carriers so that the surface of the film adsorbed water and oxygen molecules to form hydroxyl radicals and active oxygen, they have a very strong oxidation capacity, can degrade the surface adsorption of organic matter into carbon dioxide and water, so that the glass has the function of self-cleaning or become very easy to scrub.


The anti-fog capability of self-cleaning super hydrophilic films is also related to substances with photocatalytic activity. Under the light, some of the bridging oxygen bonds on the surface of the oxide photocatalyst open, causing dissociation of the nearby adsorbed water to form hydroxyl groups. These hydroxyl groups have good hydrophilicity, and when water touches the film surface, it will be completely wetted and spread, forming a thin transparent water film layer to achieve the purpose of anti-fog. The self-cleaning super hydrophilic film also has good nano hydrophilic substances, which makes the film more hydrophilic.
